I got in the mood to write alittle scifi this morning.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
chung chung chung
The noise never stopped.
chung chung chung
It was ever present, like the ship had a heart beat. The heat was ever present too. Heat that was accompanying radiation. People in this area had to be geneticly "enhanced" for the labor. They had to be able to withstand the conditions. People like Sharley. Sharley would tell anyone though, that just because you could stand a thing, didn't make a thing comfortable.
Down deep in the ship, near the core, it was dark. Dark, hot, and humid from coolant water in the air. Sharley didn't notice the odors any more. She was usually too busy walking the guages, checking for anomalies, or cleaning. Maintanance was ongoing in this place. Things grew strange in the enclosed wet heat. Strange from the core's invisible glow. Spore was a big problem. Of course Sharely's folk never had to worry, but just let one spore make it out of the core block, and into the ventilation for the rest of the ship. There could be all sorts of sickness and death.
Sharly tapped a sticky guage with her stylus. Her large irises focused on the glowing numbers. She rubbed her slick hair, cut short and spikey. She sometimes dreamed of growing it out long, but down here... Well, what was the point? She looked up, sensing someone else's heat approaching. It was Adam. His huge body was a welcome sight, along with his bald head, and wide mouth. Always smiling.
"Come," he said. "I have food." Sharley smiled and followed him to a spot amongst the pipes where they could sit. With a flourish, he pulled out a little box. Sharley oohed. It was a shiney, foil box. It came from upstairs.
"How do you get these things," Sharley asked. Adam shrugged non commitally.
"I talk to the one who talks to the kitchen staff. There is a party tonight."
"A party?" Sharley sighed. The things that the people above did were like fairy tales. Adam undid the box, revealing little cakes with colorful frosting. Sharley squeeled and dug one out, eating with her blackened fingers. For a while the thick air was filled with the sounds of eating, and the steady chung chung chung.
"Adam...Do they even know we exist?" Adam shrugged again, and layed a now slightly sticky hand on her neck.
"Shar..I don't think they care. We're like machines. They only notice when we break." Sharley sighed softly, and nodded. No matter how unfair it was, there wasn't much use in rebeling. Sharly's folk were as unsuited to the dry, rarified air of the rooms above as the shining folk with their shiney cloths and cake would be in the Core.
